the question was;
readWhat is a burning issue that will arouse the “activist” in you?
One issue which would arouse my activist in me would definitely be about the smoking measures which were being emplaced in the year 2009.
The law states that
smoking in certain areas such as playgrounds, lift lobbies, pathways and even 5m before shopping centres would be banned and failing to do so would be fined. For RP, it would be understandable when it comes to smoking within the school boundary since it is a place for education. However, apart from banning smoking at playgrounds since it is a place for children; banning smoking at lift lobbies or even near shopping centres would somehow be absurd. Before 2009 came, people take it as a social norm to smoke at lift lobbies and even outside shopping centres. By putting a law which states otherwise, it would definitely arouse my activist in me.
I have several reasons why this leads me to feel this way. Firstly, even though the government/law spares a thought for the non-smokers, they are really making life difficult for smoker’s to have a puff in public. Perhaps this is one way to reduce the bad habit of smoking due to such restrictions.
Another reason would be that the way advertisements were being made to public gave us an impression as though smokers are such ‘bad people’.
If the government/law has so much time to do so, why don’t they spend more time on certain important areas such as economy or even the education sector where everyone seems to be talking in Singlish which is a sign of poor control in English? Putting in mind that they banned smoking near shopping centres unless they’re 5m away really aroused my activist in me. This would then take up much time from the smokers whom are working in the shopping centre; be it managers, retailers or even sales-person.
Walking would take enough time to smoke one stick, but what if u add the time for walking 5m away, smoking and walking 5m back. This would then cause bias toward the rest of the non-smokers and smokers on how much time smokers took for mini-breaks which would then spark off other problems.
Thus, this would be one of the issues which I think would not only arouse my ‘activist’ in me, but also make me feel very pissed off. However, I think that the government/law is making a good move to make the public be smoke-free.
To be on the safe side; quit smoking cause it kills and fines. Ironic? I think so too.
